Popularized during wartime construction, heating oil used in domestic spaces was often stored in above-ground tanks. Painting the oil tanks to look like cows, sheep, or pigs became a popular folk art tradition — their rounded torsos and four pipe legs with flange hoofs starting to resemble grazing mammals. Wilson adopts these forms in her series of replica oil tanks, first started in 2022. The fossil fuels typically contained within the bovine-like forms (themselves derived from plant and animal remains) are replaced with scale reproductions of airport hotel rooms, deposited in the bellies of the drums and viewable through peephole doorways punctured in their exteriors. Installed at eye level, one is left to negotiate with another somatic presence generously revealing its core. These are accompanied by a selection of box-like forms, based on various cuts of pork, which sparsely line the booth's floor. The loin, the ear, the shoulder, the tenderloin, the belly and the snout are abstracted as geometric volumes and wrapped in colourful sleeves of vinyl, fabric, and reclaimed leather. In the artist's practice, these studies in pig flesh interpretations began with representational sculptures of the bodies of wild boar. Struck by their exceptional bodies, Wilson pays homage to their toned conic legs, slabbed torsos, and triangle ears that resemble twice-folded napkins. Collectively, these works point to a kinship between bovines and humans, situating the viewer both within and in contrast to the forms. Through this, Wilson expresses an interest in the reorganisation of agency and hierarchical structures. 1134058 Basel, Switzerland Press The SteidzartnetThe Art Bystander For Liste 2026, Chris Andrews is pleased to present a suite of new oil paintings on plastic and paper by Calla McInnes. Calla McInnes’ diluted figuration often revolves around a single representational feature – a profile of a chin, a torso, a pair of glasses, depicting subjects turned from the viewer’s gaze. Intentionally cropped or retracted, McInnes’ fragmented language is more reminiscent of a glimpse in peripheral vision than incisive representation, existing in the space between rendering and erasure. These meditations on perception are at the heart of the paintings, where fore- and background often commingle on the surface, the scene and the system of perspective itself rendered fluid. Calla McInnes (b. 1998) is an artist living and working in Montréal. They hold a BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (2020), and are currently an MFA candidate at Bard College, Annadale-on-Hudson, New York. On the occassion of her solo exhibition Attention, artist Alli Melanson has produced a printed calendar. This work follows her practice’s recurring motif of sites of congregation and hospitality, as well as the exhibition’s overarching theme of mirroring. Each month of the year appears twice throughout the calendar, allowing for a variety of uses: it could be used for two consecutive years, one month for business appointments, the other for pleasure, etc. Accompanying the 24-months are images sourced from a filmed interview with artist Hanne Darboven. The half-hour program saw the artist interviewed in her home studio alongside her staff (who also lived there with Darboven), and these screencaptured moments are taken from a celebratory dinner with her team. Melanson was drawn to this lively congregation, where the camera tries to track the artist, but obstacles such as a musician or piece of furniture interrupt the frame. The noisy space of the dinner party is contrasted with a reappearing phrase at the bottom of the screen: “Only then you arrive at a point where you say to yourself,”. Caused by a subtitle track error that repeats the auto translated phrase&nbsp; whenever there isn’t dialogue and interrupted only when someone begins to speak, it begins to read like the internal dialogue of an unknown narrator or character.
